While I was conducting a Historical Tour at the Bunker, a visitor asked if I could sign a copy of 'Enemy Sighted' for him, which I was more than happy to do.
Nothing worth sharing right? Wrong! Talking to him further, I learnt that his name was Peter Creer and he told me that I had written about his father in my book!
It turns out that Peter's father was Robert Creer. He was a civil servant working within the Air Ministry Works Directorate, who would later be commissioned in the rank of Squadron Leader.
Robert led and coordinated the construction work, which was completed in just seven months and became fully operational just nine days before Britain went to war with Nazi Germany!
Known affectionately as 'the Hole' by those who worked there, it was to play a pivotal role in the evacuation from Dunkirk, the Battle of Britain, the Allied raid on Dieppe, and the D-Day landings in Normandy.
What a privilege to have met the son of the man who helped build the operations room that helped save Britain and liberate the pressed people of Europe.
